How It Works
I can meet with you in person, over the telephone or by e-mail. Whatever suits you works
for me. I will need the type of speech or scene or poem you want, and its length. I will
need to learn about the person or people you are honoring, something about the audience,
the type of event, and its place and time. I will then take your information and write the
first draft of the speech. Afterwards, we can go over it and, depending upon your input,
I can make changes before doing the final draft.
Getting the Information
I will write your speech based upon our conversation and the answers you give
in the Saywords Questionnaire, a tool designed for the purpose of learning more
about the person or people you are honoring and your relationship with them.
The more specific you are with your facts, be it serious, humorous or bordering on the
ridiculous, the more specific I can be with your speech. That is why I am providing you
with two prewriting exercises of which you can opt to do one, both or neither, just as
long as you complete the Saywords Questionnaire.
Exercise One: Free Writing
Write anything that comes to mind about the person, people, event, or whatever and do
it for ten minutes. Do not correct spelling and grammatical errors; you want to free
yourself from the critic that lurks within. When the ten minutes are up, stop.
Use your findings to complete the Saywords Questionnaire.
Exercise Two: Branching
Click here for a sample of this technique.
In the center of the paper, draw a circle and write the name of the person inside it.
Next, draw branches that jet outward from the circle. How many branches is your choice.
At the ends of the branches, write words or phrases about the person whose name is in the
circle. Use your findings to complete the Saywords Questionnaire.
